Five Times the Crazy

The Yellow Slide by This Is A Wake Up Call
Stories like this just wreck my day…

The use of potent antipsychotic drugs to treat children and adolescents for problems like aggression and mood swings increased more than fivefold from 1993 to 2002, researchers reported yesterday.

"We are using these medications and don't know how they work, if they work, or at what cost," said Dr. John March, a professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at Duke University. "It amounts to a huge experiment with the lives of American kids, and what it tells us is that we've got to do something other than we're doing now to assess the drugs' overall impact"

Read Use of Antipsychotics by the Young Rose Fivefold in the NYT (and remember that most of "the young" probably didn't prescribe those drugs to themselves). How the hell do kids get 5x more psychotic in 9 years? Answer, they don't. It's doctors getting 5x more psychotic (or parents getting 5x less willing to be parents). There aren't many things that will make me type "fuckers". This is one of them.

Fuckers.

I worked for 7 years in pharmaceutical advertising.

Trust me all patient types are viewed as “markets” to maximize.
Doesn’t matter if they are children or not.

    Think everyone needs those antidepressants?

It is terrible and there is very little way to control it.
The FDA is underfunded and a joke.

[FDA tidbit: You know the nutritional labels on the food you buy? The FDA does not have the ability to test all those products. Guess who does? The food manufactures. The same people who made the product to begin with! If there are enough complaints about something they will look into it.]

There is all kindsof weirdness in the world of pharmaceuticals.
They have a TON of money and lots of politcial influence.

    Anyway… its sad.

    And a bit scary.
